Memories Box

I wanted to create a box that is reminiscent of a cork board, where you would pin up memories of photographs, gig tickets, or notes that friends had written to you. This is a very quick, and shabbily made, prototype of that. Obvious things that could be improved, is to pin more on it than just photographs - I should extend it to silly drawings, theatre tickets, or even exam results. I was thinking about turning the photographs into polaroids as well. Materials I used were: thin piece of cork card, coloured drawing pins and printer paper. Feel free to leave your thoughts and comments :)

Hostility Box

This is my prototype for my 'hostility' box. It was inspired by the artist Mona Hatoum, who turns everyday domestic objects into dangerous items, i.e. a welcome mat purely made up of steel pins. My prototype is very shabbily made, but I think it gets its point across quite nicely. Unsure whether I should have used the matte side of the tin foil as opposed to the shiny side, but I can always go back and develop this a bit more.

Evan Hecox Inspired Image

The Photoshop skills in this image are a little shoddy, but this was just a quick experiment. I wanted to edit it in an Evan Hecox style, using a very limited colour palette and thick black lines. I also added a 'home' quote to go with this image. Unsure if I like this outcome, but I'm still just trying out ideas :)

Some Experimental Work...

After the advice I received from Steve Smith during a one to one tutorial, I set off to the following experiments:

I've added the colour of the bus, and the sea. I've also added a brown screen filter as well to soften the previously harsh black lines.
I quite like the blue sky against the rest of the image which is minimalist black and white. I'm not sure I should edit it any further, but I will try anyway just to see the outcome. Watch this space...

Notion of Home - Self Defined Project Year 3

I suppose it's about time that I filled you all in on my current project, seeing as I haven't exactly explained any of my recent work!

My project is based on 'home'. It is a continuation from my Summer project, where I illustrated the plight of people in poverty living in London.

First of all, I started brainstorming ideas. These ranged from looking at nomads, backpackers, the idea of safety and turning homeless surroundings into a kitsch form.

I have a friend, Desmond Harris, who has been travelling around New Zealand for the past year and residing in a van. I like the idea of his van being his makeshift home. It provides everything he needs, bed, transport, kitchen and a general living space. I love the notion that this particular 'home' takes my friend to the most beautiful places in New Zealand. Some of the pictures that he has taken whilst on his travels, are breathtaking.

Thus I have decided to make a book, of some sort, dedicated to his faithful steed.

I want to experiment with some screen printing as well. I'm still feeling quite hazy in terms of the final product, but I'm sure this project will unfold eventually.

"It brings me an income."
